Warm your cockles with a gin cocktail. Yes, that’s right – gin is not just for summer!

You’ve probably tried mulled wine, hot whisky toddies and warming buttered rum; here is a delightful hot gin that’s perfect for keeping warm on a wintery evening.

1 cinnamon stick
4 cloves
½ grated nutmeg
800ml apple juice
200ml gin
Juice of half a lemon or orange
50g rock sugar (or sugar cubes)

Gently heat the apple juice and spices in a small pan for five minutes, stirring occasionally. Remove from the heat and add the gin and the juice of half a fresh orange or lemon, then strain into glass mugs. Garnish with fresh slices of apple, a clove or two and a cinnamon stick to serve. Add rock sugar or a sugar cube to suit.
