Responsibly produced veal is a by-product of dairy farming so as we enjoy milk, cheese or ice-cream, we believe it is also our duty not to waste the veal meat this industry produces.

Ethically-raised veal

Helen’s 2 dairy herds are the heart of Eastbrook – organic since 1986, and essential to the sustainable practices that are the ethos of our business.

Helen Browning’s Organic Rose Veal makes the most of this natural resource of livestock from our dairy herds, offering an indulgent but truly ethical eating experience.

Rich in protein and iron, organic rose veal is lower in saturated fat than beef, with a soft texture and a delicate, mild flavour.

We don’t actively breed veal calves, so the stock is limited. Available as premium cuts to showcase the delicious flavour, versatility and quick-cook nature.

Our calves:

Live outside in small sociable groups

 Slowly reared for 10 months

Encouraged to follow natural instincts to roam and forage

The best welfare standards

 Gluten-free

 Non-GM

 Certified by the Soil Association

FAQs

What is Rose Veal?

Veal is meat from calves, usually the bull calves from dairy herds, since they cannot be used for milk production. Crated veal is rightly banned in the UK. Instead, our veal comes from slow-grown calves with room to roam and forage on grass pastures, and is known as Rose Veal. Helen Browning’s organic calves live outdoors in small social groups until they are about 10 months old. Rose veal is paler than beef, and very tender.

Is eating Rose Veal ethical?

Yes. Veal is a natural by-product of the dairy industry, yet without veal production they have no value to the farmer. It is our ethical duty not to waste a food source, and it makes financial sense too – rather than destroying male calves at birth.
