Organic Gin with Pear and Sea Buckthorn

Organic Gin from British Agroforestry showcasing the taste and aroma of British wild flower meadows and orchards in a recycled glass bottle.

Agroforestry is using pioneering agriculture combining trees, plants and crops to farm together in order to build soil health and organic matter. The distinct flavour profile of Sea buckthorn, an emerging superfood, is mellowed out by the pear, fresh honey and herbal notes. Always with sustainability in mind and the rise in conscious consumer, the bottle itself is made from recycled glass with a recyclable mineral paper label and seal finished with soft wooden cork. Refillable pouches are then available to refill your gin bottle. When finished, customers can post the refill pouches back to Helen Browning’s Organic who will then recycle them.

Helen Browning’s family has farmed at Eastbrook Farm for 67 years and takes pride in forward-thinking farming methods, seeking out ways to farm that are as good as they possibly can be for people, farm animals and nature. In this way, the farm has been experimenting with agroforestry. The farm, therefore, is an oasis of wild birds, deer and a vibrant insect population alongside free-range livestock that all thrive among the pollen and flowers of sea buckthorn, dog rose, wild crab apple and pear trees in the agroforestry and 50 miles of hedgerows.

CEO of the Soil Association, Helen Browning says, “Our farm is at the heart of everything we do. Our agroforestry project is already making a positive impact on the soil on which we depend and the wildlife that live on the land. Now, excitingly, we can capture Eastbrook Farm in a bottle – and it’s delicious!”

Refreshing taste. Good way of enjoying a tipple in a more sustainable fashion.

f you want proof that all gins are not created equal, Helen Brownings Organic Gin is my favourite example. Obviously you have the juniper base but on top of that you get other distinctive flavours coming through. I think Buckthorn is one of them.
I also appreciate that the brand is truly organic ( I buy their other products) and I like that they seem to walk the walk on sustainability, not just talk the talk.
This is a special gin, not cheap, but worth it.

Really lovely gin – smooth with a subtle citrus flavour.

Citrus Gin granita

Citrus Gin Granita

Similar to sorbet, but icier. The high ratio of water to sugar gives that signature crunch. And you don’t need an ice-cream maker …

FOR THE GRANITA

  • 250ml fresh orange juice
  • 15ml lemon juice (1 large lemon)
  • 2 tbsp granulated sugar, plus more as needed
  • 1 tbsp organic gin

    TO SERVE

    • Whipped cream
    • Sprig of rosemary

In a small pot, combine orange juice, lemon juice and sugar. Heat over medium-low heat, stirring occasionally, until the sugar completely dissolves. Taste, and if it isn’t sweet enough, add another tablespoon of sugar, stir to dissolve, then taste again. Repeat as needed. Remove from the heat and stir in gin.

Pour the mixture into an 8-inch square or equivalent size dish, cover tightly, then freeze for at least 4 hours. At least once every hour, use a fork to lightly scrape the surface to break up the frozen juice into tiny crystals. Once the granita has been scraped to a fluffy consistency, cover the dish and freeze until ready to serve.

    Be an early bird.
